While those who scream the ethical issues of generative AI suggest it will be the end of all of humanity, the center states that there are advantages to this technology, the world just needs to be more careful.

Similar to the Center for AI Safety, the Center for Humane Technology states key issues and possible solutions. It seems as though the center aims more at the root cause – humans – rather than looking at the creation and how it will ultimately take over the world. This organization is actively looking into policies and regulation while also calling out citizens to force companies to be more ethical in AI practices.

Additionally, the co-founders of the center are themselves using AI, yet in humane ways. Aza Raskin is the president of a nonprofit that is using AI to try to decode animal speech so humans can better connect with animals and nature, which he hopes will lead to better protecting the planet, thus leading to fighting climate change.

Reflection #2

I am in the group that is writing a case study about the Center for Humane Technology. I am at the stage now where I have created an outline, and I’m trying to find either articles that have been found during class or new articles about the sections I have outlined for my portion of the case study. My portion of the case study is in the perspective that the cofounders and the center are doing good things for consumers and trying to consciously take a look at the tech industry and create good outcomes with the use of AI.

At the moment, it is a slow process and a bit difficult for me to come up with 3000 words. I think it is because I am trying to outline the information I have and stay within those confines without going down a rabbit hole of information. My topic is humanism, but the central focus of my entire portion is putting humans at the forefront of AI. This entails defining humane technology and exploring the various concepts within the concept of humanism. As I’m creating my paragraphs, it seems more and more that I need to look up other articles to reference a new idea that I have come up with pertaining to the topic. Also, trying to tie all the subsections together is a bit difficult because I want it all to flow in a logical order and not jump from one random topic to another and none of them correlate to each other.

For the most part, I think my team is communicating fairly well. There are a couple of hiccups here and there, but I think that is inevitable with any group. I think Jayden is a good project manager in the sense that he communicates well and keeps us on track.

Reflection #3

I think the slow progression over time into creating content with 3000 words has been very helpful. I have the time to flesh out new ideas, tie in previously visited ideas, expand on top of what I have already thought of and written, or completely let go of a direction/subtopic. My initial plan was to have an introduction section and a conclusion in addition to four other sections similar to an essay, report, or technical document format, but I’m leaning more toward a journalistic article style of writing. I also think the meetings are very helpful simply because for me, receiving feedback and input helps me out a lot and I enjoy receiving constructive criticism as well.

I have been researching more into post-humanism and how it ties into humane technology itself, and what the Center for Humane Technology has been doing in regards to post-humanism. Humanism itself may date back centuries and focus on ancient philosophy, but in relation to today’s technology, I think I can expound a bit more with the focus being based on reason and critical thinking concerning generative AI. The more I learn about both of these concepts, the more I feel the center practices behaviors concerning both. There still may not be much information solely for a humanism section, so it may need to be combined with post-humanism.

In the last week, my team has collaborated on bringing our ideas and topics together so the case study can seem more like one cohesive project. We have created our home page as well as distributed out the roles. We have also discussed how we will work together to provide the links to each topic to place on the home page. We have developed a schedule that allows enough time to write on our topic, provide feedback for each other, then reconstruct if need be before the next meeting.

Case Study: The Center for Humane Technology Reflection #1 What is interesting to me is the Center for Humane Technology protests all the things other agencies and individuals are protesting, such as unemployment and the spread of disinformation, yet the non-profit organization does not protest AI in the same way.
