Case Study: The Center for Humane Technology
Reflection #1
What is interesting to me is the Center for Humane Technology protests all the things other agencies and individuals are protesting, such as unemployment and the spread of disinformation, yet the non-profit organization does not protest AI in the same way. While those who scream the ethical issues of generative AI suggest it will be the end of all of humanity, the center states that there are advantages to this technology, the world just needs to be more careful.
Similar to the Center for AI Safety, the Center for Humane Technology states key issues and possible solutions. It seems as though the center aims more at the root cause – humans – rather than looking at the creation and how it will ultimately take over the world. This organization is actively looking into policies and regulation while also calling out citizens to force companies to be more ethical in AI practices.
Additionally, the co-founders of the center are themselves using AI, yet in humane ways. Aza Raskin is the president of a nonprofit that is using AI to try to decode animal speech so humans can better connect with animals and nature, which he hopes will lead to better protecting the planet, thus leading to fighting climate change.
